Two new Ohio University dormitories have been named for men who helped shape the history of the University.

They are Parks Hall and Grosvenor Hall, the first two buildings in the University’s West Green Dormitory project.

A brevet (brigadier) general during the Civil War, Charles H. Grosvenor also served for 20 years as U. S. Congressman and was responsible for getting Andrew Carnegie to provide funds for a library at Ohio University.

The dormitory named in his honor has been completed, and will house approximately 250 students beginning this September.

It has been named for Professor Emeritus George C. Parks, a 1908 graduate of the University who served for 40 years as an accounting professor, business manager, treasurer, and secretary of the Board of Trustees before his retirement in 1948.

Still a resident of Athens, Professor Parks has a farm where he raises Hereford cattle. His second main interest is the study of the Civil War, in which General Grosvenor played an important role.

General Grosvenor, in addition to getting the Carnegie Library (now a classroom building) for Ohio, presented a helped pass a legislative bill that recovered some much-needed tax money for the University after the Civil War.

Grosvenor Hall has dining facilities for 1600, which will be utilized when the other dormitories are built.

Costing $1,150,000 for building and furnishings, the new housing unit which has a total capacity of 479 has not yet been named.

Parks Hall, the second unit, was partially opened to students during the fall semester. It will be filled to its capacity of 260 at the beginning of this new semester. Parks Hall cost $750,000.

Grosvenor Hall, which initiated the West Green Project, housed 254 students for the first time last September, and is expected to accommodate approximately the same number starting in February.

Five dormitories on Ohio University’s West Green have been named by the Board of Trustees. The dormitories, most recent to be constructed in the housing area, have been designated by numbers since being completed.

Three of the buildings were named for former presidents of the University: Isaac Crook, who served from 1896 to 1898; Alfred Ryors, 1848-1852; and James Irvine, 1822- 1824.

The others were named for two former professors, both deceased. They were Dr. Hiram Roy Wilson, a graduate of 1896 and professor of English in the College of Education from 1897 to his retirement in 1945, and Frederick Treudly, a member of the faculty from 1902 to his retirement in 1921. Professor Treudly taught philosophy, sociology and educational methods.

Dr. Wilson died in Athens Aug. 4, 1954, at the age of 89. Professor Treudly killed was when struck by an automobile on a Washington, D.C. street in 1939.
