A lot has happened on the Ohio University campus since the last Black Alumni Reunion in spring 2007. In fall of that year, Alvin Adams Hall was dedicated as the university’s newest residence hall. Adams was the university’s first African-American journalism graduate in 1959; he went on to a successful career in journalism and public relations.

In June 2009, Ohio University’s first class of Urban Scholars graduated. The Urban Scholars program provides a full, four-year scholarship to selected Ohio urban high school students with excellent academic achievement and financial need. Ohio University president Roderick J. McDavis and his wife Deborah established the scholarship program, which has been widely praised as a success.

“What has happened with (McDavis’ presidency) has been the picture of progress with diversity. Us embracing that as a part of the reunion is very important,” says Dell Robinson, ’88, Commissioner of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Robinson has only missed one Black Alumni Reunion since he graduated.

“When I first attended, I was so into seeing ‘my group,’” Robinson says, referring to his chance to reconnect with other former football players, fraternity brothers and Precollege advisers. Now, Robinson focuses on interacting with current students as well. Attending 2010’s reunion will be Urban Scholars, fraternity and sorority members, as well as students involved with the Black Student Cultural Programming Board. “I hope there will be a continued opportunity for the alumni and the students to interact,” Robinson says, “We get more mileage out of going back and giving back.”
