OHIO alumna donates more than $41 million in 2010
Viola Patton, a 1938 College of Education alumna who recently donated $13.3 million to be put towards a community arts center, has also donated $28 million to the College of Education in honor of her parents. She has donated more than $41 million to Ohio University since the beginning of the year.
Latin Studies marks 40th anniversary
The 9th Annual Ohio Latin Americanist Conference, to be held on Feb. 26-27 in Bentley Hall, will mark the 40th anniversary of Ohio University's Latin American Studies program. The theme of this year’s conference is "Modern Latin America: The Blurring of Ideological Platforms." The Latin American Studies program is housed within the Center for International Studies. Two OHIO staff members share passion for OHIO and music
This is information you might not know about Assistant Vice President for Alumni Relations Graham Stewart and his wife, Alumni and Internship Coordinator for the Scripps College of Communication Tina Stewart: both have music in their blood. Graham is a vocalist who has performed with the bands the Gregg Smith Singers and jazz Spoken Here. He is also an award-winning whistler. Tina is an opera-singer who won the district and regional levels at the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions when she was 24 years old.
Energy conservation becoming conversation
EcoReps and the Office of Sustainability are hosting four conservation dinners throughout winter quarter to promote the importance of energy conservation. At the first event on Feb. 11., students ate dinner by candlelight as a way to conserve energy. The events were created to promote two of the university’s ongoing “green” competitions, Residence Challenge and RecycleMania.

LAST MONTH: Charlotte Networking Week, Feb. 18–20
OUAA provided online registration this year for student sessions, the banquet and other activities. Student attendee Sarah Kelly said, "I was extremely impressed with how well organized and beneficial the program was. I felt the alumni involved were welcoming and made me feel comfortable with all questions I had. I truly enjoyed my time in Charlotte; the alumni at the event helped me to see what a great city Charlotte is for a recent graduate of Ohio University. Student-made film showing in Ohio
The first feature film made by students in the School of Media Arts and Studies at Ohio University has several engagements in Ohio throughout March and April.
"Trailerpark," the almost entirely student-produced film based on the book of short stories by acclaimed author Russell Banks, was recently accepted to the Cleveland International Film Festival. The festival will take place from March 18-28 and the film will show on March 19, 20 and 21. Tickets will be available in early March on the festival's Web site. For more information, click here.
Your Ohio University Alumni Association is sponsoring two Ohio screenings of the film in April. The film will be show at the Esquire Theatre in Cincinnati on April 8 at 7:30 p.m. and at the Tower City Theatre in Cleveland on April 15 at 7 p.m. For more information, visit the Special Events section of our site here.

Founders Day celebrates 206 years of education
Ohio University celebrated 206 years of providing students with a top-notch education on Feb. 19 at the annual Founders Day celebration.
Hosted by the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost, the 2010 event was an all-day celebration.
The event included the Founders Day Convocation, live music performances from Tim Peacock and the Rattletrap Boys and students and faculty from OHIO’s School of Music, a reception for the Women in Appalachia Exhibition, the 2010 Ohio University School of Art Faculty Exhibition at the Kennedy Museum and many other interactive events focusing on the University’s long history.
Executive Vice President and Provost Pam Benoit recently explained to Outlook the importance of such events.
"I'm a believer in the importance of social memory in the life of a university," she said. "That's why events such as Founders Day matter. Sharing what came before helps us to gain confidence in our ability to succeed in what lies ahead."
